Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
Even when you believe a firearm is unloaded, handle it with the same care and respect you would give a loaded firearm.
Never assume. Verify — EVERY TIME.
Every time you pick up or take control of a firearm, verify its condition for yourself.
That includes a firearm you personally checked earlier.
If the firearm has been outside your direct observation — even briefly — check it again.
- You stepped away to use the restroom? Verify it again.
- You went to get water? Verify it again.
- You turned your back and someone else had an opportunity to handle it? Verify it again.
- Someone hands you a firearm and tells you, “It’s unloaded”? Verify it yourself.
- You just finished showing or demonstrating it to someone? Verify it again when you take control of it.
G.L.O.W. Rule: If it leaves your sight, it gets checked again. EVERY TIME.
Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy.
Always maintain awareness of the direction your muzzle is pointing.
A safe direction is one where an unintended discharge would cause the least possible injury or damage.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have made the decision to shoot.
Your trigger finger should remain straight and indexed along the frame, outside the trigger guard, until you are ready to fire.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Know exactly what you are shooting at, what is around it, and what may be behind it.
You are responsible for every round you fire.
